Stephen Spender collection, [ca. 1940-1987].

The collection consists of the papers of Stephen Spender from 1940-1987. The papers include correspondence while editor of Horizon and co-editor of Encounter, some loose manuscripts of critiques and poems, and a notebook featuring criticism, poetry, and drafts of essays, and a number of newspaper clippings about him (all in Italian).

Sir Stephen Harold Spender (February 28, 1909 - July 16, 1995) was an English poet and novelist who worked with the themes of social injustice and class struggle. Spender was born in London and educated at University College, Oxford. He was mentored by W. H. Auden with whom he maintained a life-long friendship.
